He could feel the strong wind
following the contours of his face while it was blowing from his right. The
smell of the air was refreshing, very different from the city streets below.
The light was as if trying to break through the clouds and he felt some of the
sun’s rays emanating his cheeks while the dead leaves of the trees behind him
were falling to the ground. He was right there; literally standing on the edge
and the sight across was a majestic afternoon view of the entire city.
But he did not
even notice one single spark of beauty that was surrounding him. All he thought
of was the heavy feeling that was burdening. He had been keeping it inside for
a while and the pain was excruciating. It was like as if a million needles were
pricking his heart while slowly crushing it like a grape. It felt unbearable
and he thought of nothing else but that and jumping off the cliff.
For a brief
moment, he took a peek to make sure what was down below. When he was satisfied
that it was a pool of limestone—he turned around, his back facing the city. He stood still and saw the trees flutter vigorously as the wind continued to pass by. It was the same as what he felt—a continued wave of sorrow that shook his insides. For the first time, he was certain—he wanted to end his life. He
took a deep breath, lifted his arms just a little, and with the final decision—shifted
his weight backward.
At that very moment,
his vision did not go blur with speed. It was as if his world suddenly went into
slow motion, slow enough to the point that he could see with vivid detail the
jagged surface of the rock face while it slowly became taller and taller. It
gave him time to think—to think about what had happened. He remembered at that
time every event, every emotion, everything that led him to his demise.
His name was Ian
and it was his first day in college when he woke up with an excited feeling. He
was thrilled to be in a new environment after spending four dull years in high
school. He was taking up medical technology in a school that had its own
functioning hospital. The school was one of the best medical schools in the
city and it was also where his mother earned her medical degree. One can even
say that he was following his mother’s footsteps in becoming a great doctor.
He had a few
friends that also went to that same school, including his best friend, Henry.
Henry was the type of guy you typically would want to avoid. He was weird at
times, talked enthusiastically about things you never would be interested in,
and he was annoying. But one of the main things that made people stay away from
him especially the girls was because he was a pervert—of the worst kind.
Ian didn’t even
remember how they ended up to be the best of friends. He was not a pervert like
him; he was actually quite the shy character. People found him to be a quiet
person, but very smart and witty. But Ian knows that he did not befriended
Henry just because he pitied him, that Henry would have a hard time finding company
if he didn’t. Maybe there was just one thing that they had in common that he
didn’t notice.
But there was one
girl—just one girl that not even Henry dared to fantasize about. Not because
she was hideous or anything, she was in fact very beautiful. Every boy in their
high school seemed to have a crush on her, but nobody dared to confess,
including Ian. She was very kind to everybody but there was just one fact about
her that made her seem—unreachable. But to Ian, it didn’t really matter. He was
just contented if ever he could have the chance to stare at her.
Her name was Ava
and Ian looked down at the floor when he saw her walking in the opposite
direction. He knew that she would greet him a good morning if ever she got
close and he was worried that his voice would tremble if he greeted back. So he
slowed his pace hoping that she would enter one of the classrooms to his left
before they get past one another.
And she did, but
the problem was, it was the same room that he was heading to. He was suddenly
filled with mixed feelings. Happy because they were classmates and that he can
finally have that rare chance to stare at her, appreciating her beauty for as
long as he would want, but nervous because he might do something stupid in that
particular class.
When Ian entered
the room, he saw a few familiar faces. Ava was talking with her friends in one
side of the room, he assumed that they were talking about how their summer was
or how they have been doing, but he didn’t really care. It was just intuitive
of him to assume things when he sees them. He deliberately seated himself just
a few rows behind where Ava was seated so he could get a good view of her.
“Ian!” he heard
somebody yell. He looked around the room to see who it was and finally saw
Henry by the door. “Trying to get a good view eh?” he said grinning while
walking towards him.
Everybody in the
room heard what he said and turned their heads to both of them, including Ava
and her friends. Ian felt embarrassed and it was as though he shrunk at that
moment.
“Oh don’t worry,”
he said smiling as if to reassure him, “they don’t really know what I’m talking
about.” but it didn’t really help at all.
Henry sat down on
the chair next to Ian and just a few moments later, their instructor finally
arrived. Ian felt a little bit relieved that Henry won’t have the chance to do
more damage—well not until the end of the subject at least, or when the
instructor calls in a short break or something.
“Good morning class!”
she announced with a very excited voice, “It’s always nice to see fresh new
faces every year!” she smiled.
